A really short post! Gelato Messina in Fitzroy is certainly a popular place. My friend is addicted to it (amazingly he’s still skinny at this rate) and asked if we could skip dessert and head to Fitzroy for dessert instead. Heading there, I thought I had actually driven past a nightclub – on the Saturday night it was busy with a queue forming outside and a lot of people loitering around. Such is the craze surrounding Gelato Messina, the very famous gelato shop originating in Sydney and featured in Masterchef.
The queue moved rather quickly and I chose two of their signature flavours – apple pie and the salted caramel white chocolate. I must say I found both on the sweet side (caramel duh) but certainly it was impressive! I can see why people say the flavours are fresh and not artificial. With the apple pie there are chunks of apple pie distributed throughout it (definitely an idea to replicate at home if I have left over pie and cream!) and who could go past salted caramel…. Biggest seller for a reason but with both of the flavours together, I found it a tad on the sweet side.
With so many people we still managed to find a seat to enjoy our quickly melting cones. I’ll be back soon – I want to try their pistachio (guess who imports pistachios from Italy to make into gelato?) and pear and rhubarb. For those eager to research into which gelato to choose (yes even though we had to queue it’s not enough time to think about which flavour to try!), their website list some recommended flavour combinations such as Coconut and Lychee & Mango Sorbet.
For those who like to share – there’s only $1 difference between 2 and 3 scoops! I did the sensible thing and demolished a cone of two scoops after a full dinner.
